Violence: It’s all a power play

Gender based violence is not caused by poverty, illiteracy, alcoholism or those factors that we attribute as causes. Those are just driving factors. The cause of Gender based violence is Power imbalance. Our misuse of the contextual/ situational power that we posses is what makes us fight to have people below us. Gender Based Violence exists because the perpetrator wants to show the victim that he or she has more power.

Mutengu Joshua is an ardent supporter of women’s rights. He first caught this curator’s attention when he said “The most glaring evidence of patriarchy in this country is that a man can have multiple wives and a woman can only have one husband!”.

He works with the anti-domestic violence coalition based in Jinja District.
